Mary Anne Theiss
Dr. Mary Anne Theiss joined Kaplan University as an adjunct professor in the Master of Science in Nursing online programs in 2009. She became full time in 2010. Her responsibilities include course design and revisions, course lead for MN 506, 530 and 531, and teaching responsibilities in the graduate nursing programs.
Prior to joining Kaplan University, Dr. Theiss, as a nurse attorney, represented nurses and other health care providers faced with licensure issues. As a nurse attorney, she taught and designed courses at The State University of New York Institute of Technology, Syracuse University, Keuka College, and The New School of Social Research. She held roles on the nursing advisory boards of The State University of New York Institute of Technology and Keuka College. She lectured extensively to health care providers in the areas of medical-legal issues. Dr. Theiss partners with INOVA to conduct research in the area of informatics. She has also researched the correlation of cognitive presence and auditory posting in the online course room. She reviewed online courses throughout the United States as a master reviewer for quality matters. Dr. Theiss has severed as the president of the Upstate New York Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and currently is an attorney advocate for the American Diabetes Association. She has raised thousands of dollars for diabetes research and was instrumental in the fight to increase funding for diabetes on the federal level and helping school children with diabetes receive necessary drugs and treatment during the school day. Dr. Theiss is the president of Sigma Theta Tau International Phi Rho Chapter at Kaplan University. Her global efforts include diabetic screening in Bangalore, India; updating the medical library at the Baptist Hospital in Bangalore with current books and journals; and developing webinars for the Rebecca Ann Naylor School of Nursing in India.
Dr. Theiss is certified as a nurse educator and managed care nurse. She is licensed as a registered nurse in the states of New York and Iowa. She is admitted to practice as an attorney in New York State and the Federal Courts Northern District of New York. She holds a doctorate in education with a specialization in instructional design for online learning (IDOL) from Capella University and graduated with distinction. She received a Master of Nursing as a medical surgical clinical nurse specialist and a Juris Doctorate from Syracuse University. She started her nursing career as a RN diploma graduate from Auburn Memorial School of Nursing in Auburn, New York. After working in the area of critical care nursing, she went on for bachelor’s degree in nursing from The State University of New York Institute of Technology Utica/Ro.
