The Master of Arts in Teaching offers an online pathway to teaching.
Each state or territory has unique requirements for becoming a teacher; all require aspiring teachers to:
- Have a bachelor's degree
- Complete a teacher preparation program
- Pass one or more certification exams
- Complete a background check
Most states also require student teaching experience or some type of face-to-face field experience in the classroom.
These requirements are generally standard across states; however, some states may have additional or unique requirements. You must independently research the licensing requirements in any state in which you intend to seek licensure.
Master of Arts in Teaching, Iowa Certification Track
Our Master of Arts in Teaching's Iowa certification track is for students who live in Iowa or in close enough proximity to conduct weekly field experiences at an Iowa school. After students successfully complete the Iowa certification track, they will be recommended for Iowa licensure.
Master of Arts in Teaching, Noncertification Track
The noncertification track is designed to provide you with an understanding of secondary teaching practices. Thanks to alliances with two alternative teacher certification programs―American Board and ECAP―upon completion of the program you may be eligible to seek alternative certification in 11 states: Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah. While this track will not lead to teacher certification on its own and is not required to pursue a state alternative certification program, it complements the American Board and ECAP programs by developing your competencies in secondary education at the master's level.
If you're interested in teaching outside of the 11 states listed above or Iowa, you must independently research and pursue certification in your state. On its own, the Master of Arts in Teaching's noncertification track will not lead to certification nor will it assist you in becoming a teacher in those states.
