Kaplan University Student Organization Members Paid Tribute to Military Veterans

    Melissa Harner

In observance of Veterans Day 2013, student organizations Ambassadors and Leaders, the Kaplan University Student Military Association (KUSMA), and the Graduate Information Technology Association (GITA), coordinated a letter writing campaign to show support for deployed troops, wounded warriors, and military veterans through the national organization Operation Gratitude.

Through the partnership of these three (3) Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), forty-one letters were collected and provided to Operation Gratitude.

Dee Servance, recent graduate and past student president of Ambassadors and Leaders stated, "As the granddaughter of a Navy officer, I grew up with a deep respect for the military. This project seemed like the perfect opportunity to reach out to KUSMA, who then spoke to GITA about working together. It's amazing what we can do when we put our heads together. I'm proud of those who helped and those who sent letters in. It's beautiful how much love and respect there is for soldiers who fight for our freedom."

Operation Gratitude is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, volunteer-based corporation, providing civilians all across America with the opportunity to say "thank you"  to service men and women through collection drives, letter writing campaigns, financial donations, and other various initiatives.

Kaplan University instructor Dr. Desiree DePriest and organization advisor for GITA stated, "I was so excited when Lyndon Kubitz, former student president and executive board member of GITA, approached me with the project Operation Gratitude." She then said, "Our military are the silent heroes of our democracy and do so much on behalf of American liberty. We cannot thank them enough."

This community service project is only one of many supported by the 34 different student organizations at Kaplan University, and despite the extra challenge of doing something for the greater good from a distance, organizations are finding creative ways to accomplish goals that have a positive impact on the community around them.
