Kaplan University’s chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), an honor society for high-achieving college students, maintained its gold star status at the organization’s 2014 national convention ScholarCon in Orlando, Florida.

To maintain this honor, an online chapter of NSCS must complete a number of society criteria, such as service projects, leadership training, webinars, and other activities that engage their community. The chapter must also sponsor orientations for potential members and select multiple student leaders to govern the university’s chapter of the honor society.

Kaplan University instructors Dr. Ellen Manning and Dr. Russell Fail serve as organization advisors for the chapter. Dr. Manning was awarded a scholarship from the national chapter of NSCS to attend ScholarCon 2014. She has been an advisor of the organization for 3 years, but this was the first year she was able to attend the national convention. When asked about her experience at the conference, she states, “it was an uplifting and exciting conference to attend.”

ScholarCon is an unconventional convention providing 4 days of high-profile speakers, engaging sponsors, and interactive opportunities. Also representing Kaplan University’s NSCS chapter was Tallulah Bowser, VP, Public Relations. Dr. Manning stated, “she did a fabulous job of representing our chapter, with an open smile and joyful demeanor that exuded her appreciation for our Chapter and NSCS."

While in attendance, both Dr. Manning and Tallulah were able to connect and establish relationships with many members of the national chapter and other attendees. There were 60 universities represented at the conference. A highlight in 2014 was John Legend’s performance and inspirational presentation. Dr. Manning stated, “he was one of the best speakers we ever had.”

In anticipation for the 2015 conference, Dr. Manning hopes the chapter can move up to platinum level status and would like to increase Kaplan University's presence at ScholarCon 2015. “I sincerely hope we can get all our officers and many members to attend next year.” Tallulah is planning to present about the conference for the members who were not able to attend this y ear’s conference. She stated, “this trip was just what I needed and a true learning experience and I wouldn't change a thing.”

The Kaplan University chapter of NSCS currently has 1,720 active student members. It has been shared from the national office that Kaplan University has the largest chapter of their 333 chapters. NSCS is open to first and second year college students who hold a 3.4 cumulative grade point average or better.
