Golden Key International Honour Society Awards $10,000 in Scholarships to Kaplan University Students

    SL - HaileyKey213

Kaplan University students who are members of the Golden Key International Honour Society have the unique opportunity to apply for a variety of scholarships offered by the national organization each year.

Out of 185 individuals across the nation who applied for the 2013 Education Debt Reduction Scholarship, only 17 were awarded.  Our very own Kaplan University student, Hailey Key, was one of the recipients of the $5,000 award scholarship.  This will be used to assist her in the repayment of student loans.

When asked what was required of her during the application process, she replied "I wrote two essays:  one based on my financial circumstances and a second  on my ten year plan and where I see myself professionally, educationally, and personally in the future. I also had to provide my most recent grade point average (GPA), list the courses I have taken, what volunteer work I have completed, and my past careers."

Additionally, another fortunate Kaplan University student, Megan Bohlman, was the recipient of the Undergraduate Achievement Scholarship, valued at $5,000.  This scholarship recognizes undergraduate members for outstanding commitment to the Golden Key pillars of academics, leadership, and service.  Of the 290 individuals who applied for the award, only 25 who received the scholarship.

Hailey Key urges students to "apply to as many scholarships that you are eligible for.  In my almost 4 years at Kaplan University, I cannot count how many scholarships I applied for. However, all my hard work paid off eventually; I have been awarded a total of 5 different scholarships that have completely eliminated my debt with Kaplan University and provided me funds for one of my study abroad trips. I still apply to scholarships on a weekly basis in hopes of being awarded funds to minimize my government student loans."  Hailey studied abroad in New Zealand, Australia, and China through the International Scholar Laureate program supported by Golden Key.

Nancy Chamlee, scholarship coordinator of the Golden Key International Honour Society stated they "look forward to many more winners coming from your University. Golden Key believes in the investment of the education of our high achieving students and commits to award more than $1 million annually to our deserving membership."

Students who meet eligibility requirements are sent an invitation during membership drives which are typically held twice a year.  It is open to all majors; students must rank in the top 15 percent of their class. Undergraduate students must complete 45 credits or more while graduate students must complete 26 credits or more at Kaplan University (no transfer credits).
