Learning Center Experience
To create a more unified community, the Kaplan University Office of Student Life and Hagerstown campus introduced a blended orientation that allowed new students attending an on-site campus walkthrough on March 24 to listen and watch an Adobe Connect webinar, presented by Student Life Manager Maurice Brown and Student Life Specialist Audra Kachonik, welcoming them to Kaplan University and sharing how they could get involved outside the classroom.
"I was thrilled by the opportunity to inform our campus students that they too are able to take advantage of the clubs, honor societies, and workshops that we offer," Maurice stated. He went on to say that "for the longest time it was believed that this was only something that our online students were able to take advantage of, and I wanted to make sure we changed that message as every Kaplan University student, both online and at our campuses, should be allotted the same opportunities to become engaged, develop, and stay connected."
Helping to coordinate the event on campus, IT Program Director Tatyana Zidarov gladly supported the initiative in which two 30-minute sessions were offered at different times during the day to accommodate student schedules. The debut of this new orientation went off without a hitch and was well received by the attending students, who later connected with Student Life to join a few of the registered student organizations.
Tatyana states, "The students were really excited to learn about the various clubs and honor societies along with the steps to join, and Maurice and Audra did a fantastic job engaging the students and answering all their questions. This blended orientation was a huge success and I am looking forward to continuing to work with Student Life."
Therefore, with a successful kickoff, Student Life and Tatyana plan to continue offering this orientation for her new students every term start, and discussion with other administrators on campus is already underway to identify additional opportunities to work together and further improve students' experience and development.
