Faculty member and advisor to Kaplan University's chapter of Autism Speaks U, Lisa Wright, was given the opportunity to attend the national Autism Speaks reception at the University of Miami at the end of March this year. Honored to be invited, she was also thrilled to screen the new documentary, Sounding the Alarm, which explores the lives of several families of children with autism.

According to Lisa's summary of the evening, "The founders of Autism Speaks, Bob and Suzanne Wright, introduced the film and answered questions with the filmmakers in a panel discussion following the film. The panel discussed cutting-edge research funded by Autism Speaks and outreach and advocacy activities including Light It Up Blue."

Light It Up Blue is the international celebration of the United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day, and is the kick off to Autism Awareness Month. Kaplan University's chapter of Autism Speaks U has quite a few autism awareness events taking place throughout April this year. A few examples of these activities are as follows:

    • A Mile in Autism live webinar event held on April 2. Student leaders in the Autism Speaks U executive board discussed topics on the history of autism, medical and psychological perspectives and personal experiences related to autism. There were over 40 participants in this event.
    • Puzzle Piece Fundraiser Campaign throughout the month of April. Students and staff who donate $5 to Autism Speaks in order to raise funds for research, advocacy, and awareness receive a digital puzzle piece, which is the symbol for autism awareness.
    • Walk Now Fundraiser on April 6 in Miami or virtually. Students and staff are encouraged to join a walk team if they are in the Miami area, or to donate and participate virtually if they are not in Miami.
