Learning Center Experience
On September 11, 2014 the Kaplan University chapter of the Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society inducted 23 new members into their distinguished honor society for undergraduate and graduate criminal justice students.
As is their mission statement, "Alpha Phi Sigma strives to promote analytical thinking, rigorous scholarship, and lifelong learning; to keep abreast of the advances in scientific research; to elevate the ethical standards of the criminal justice professions; and to sustain the benefit and necessity of education and professional training in the public mind. The organization is overseen by an elected team of Kaplan University student leaders and volunteer faculty advisor(s). These individuals arrange events and communications that encourage engagement throughout the Kaplan University community and their student members."
Kaplan University instructor Dr. Denise Womer serves as organization advisor to the group and continuously encourages student engagement among both new and old members.
When asked about the induction ceremony, Dr. Womer stated, "I want to welcome newly inducted members to the Kaplan's Theta Phi Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma. It is an honor to be a member and you are recognized for your academic excellence. I look forward to us working together and to promote the goals of Alpha Phi Sigma; to honor and promote academic excellence; community service; educational leadership and unity."
Alpha Phi Sigma was founded in 1942. There are currently 381 chapters. The Kaplan University chapter currently has 785 lifelong members.
Alpha Phi Sigma, falling in line with Kaplan University's other honor societies, invites eligible students to join their organization twice a year by email. Future students eligible for an invite must be a bachelor's or master-level criminal justice major and have completed a minimum of four criminal justice courses. Bachelor's degree students must have a minimum of a 3.2 cumulative GPA and master students must have a minimum of a 3.4 cumulative GPA.
