Kaplan University's SHRM: Making a Difference for Troops

    Society for Human Resource Management

One of the challenges for student organizations working within a predominantly online community is creating a service project where all members can contribute. By thinking outside the box of normal practice organizations, the Kaplan University chapter of the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) has done just that.

Partnering with the Overseas Coupon Program to aid soldiers and their families stationed in Grafenwoerh, Germany, SHRM members are sorting, snipping, and shipping over coupons that will help military families stretch their limited resources.

"We believe that by mailing coupons to our adopted base in Germany, we can do a great amount of good for our service men and women in a convenient, low-cost manner," says Patricia Turnham, student president of Kaplan University's SHRM organization.

Since the project started in January 2014, over $14,500 worth of coupons have been collected, sorted, and sent to the military base.  This will be an ongoing activity that SHRM members and the Kaplan University community can participate in this year.

If you are interested in supporting this service project, please follow these steps as provided by SHRM:

    • Clip any manufacturers coupon (except for restaurant coupons as soldiers do not have access to them) that are up to 2 months expired
    • Once they are sorted in food and non-food categories, simply mail them to :
