Learning Center Experience
Living in Miami, Paul
Myers enjoys teaching
elementary students math, planning lessons, and acting as department chairperson at Miami Dade County Public schools, the
fourth largest public school district in America. He set his sights on becoming
an administrator because he is passionate about educational leadership and wants to increase
his earning potential. But there were challenges.
In his early 40s, Paul found himself at a
crossroads. “I was
juggling being a single father with limited time after a difficult divorce and
working full time as a teacher.” He knew in order to achieve his goal of being
an administrator he needed a master’s degree but he couldn’t imagine how that
would be possible—until he spoke to an advisor at Kaplan University.
“They made it easy for me to learn about options for financing
my education. The online mechanics were excellent, very user friendly. The
teachers were also excellent. It was so convenient.” He spent about 2 hours
each evening covering the coursework. After 6 months he obtained a master’s
degree in education with an emphasis in special needs. But he didn’t stop
there. He continued on for another 6 months and earned a second master's degree in education with an emphasis in educational leadership.
“It is a great solution for the working
professional,” he said of Kaplan University’s online programs. “My advisor
stayed in touch with me after graduation. I felt well prepared and passed the
Florida educational leadership exam, which qualifies me to apply for the County
school program that leads to a job as assistant principal and eventually
Paul holds deep content expertise in the area of
mathematics as well as in assessment and instruction. While pursuing his master’s
degree some unexpected strengths shined through. “Kaplan University emphasizes
working as a team. There were many opportunities for professional growth,
including weekly professional development meetings, webinars, instructional
coaching, and outside
He learned to better manage his time and became comfortable
writing efficiently and effectively. “Taking the courses improved my analytical skills— the
kind needed for constant curriculum planning,
development and refinement of tasks. These skills will be tremendously critical
when I become an administrator.”
Confidence may be a critical factor as well. “The
high grade point average that I maintained at Kaplan University instilled
within me a positive
attitude, maturity, and personal stability to meet the
demanding situations that administrators face daily.”
While Paul plans for a future as an
administrator, he honors his role in the classroom. “I make sure to infuse joy and rigor in lessons
so that students are excited about and invested in their academic excellence.” He believes that his degree and determination have
provided him with the capability to change. “When and where to do it, is up to
me. I have choices now and feel confident and qualified to move to the next
level, when the opportunity arises.”
