    Giving Through Education

Education has the potential to change lives, communities, and the world. In the United States, an education can open the doors of opportunity for many, while in developing countries it can help drive economic and political change. Hundreds of organizations dedicate their efforts to improving education and striving to provide an education to people in developing countries.

One organization that is helping to drive change in our classrooms, student outcomes and success, and teacher development is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda Gates are giving back to communities around the world and making positive impacts in education and other areas including global health.

Bill and Melinda Gates were driven to create the Foundation after they read an article about millions of children in other countries who were dying from diseases that had already been eradicated in the United States. One of the first initiatives of the Bill and Melinda Gate’s Foundation was to help children in India receive polio vaccines.

As the years progressed, the Foundation expanded its focus into other public health issues, homelessness in the United States, agricultural research and support, and education. In the area of education, the Foundation is focused on “College-Ready Education.”

The strategy behind the Foundation’s education efforts in the United States is to prepare all United States students for college-level work. The program focuses on improving teaching and learning by working with states, schools, and other partners.

The organization conducts research and shares research results, insights, and tools that support teaching, learning, and innovations in the classroom. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations hopes to transform the U.S. public education system so teachers can develop professionally to help students learn and students can acquire the skills they need to succeed in college.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s charitable investments towards education could potentially lead to improving communities and the lives of many people. By giving through education, the Foundation helps others succeed in life and in turn give back to their community through their successes.

At the Center for Public Service, we recognize the importance of an education and student success. We understand the obstacles many face in learning, getting an education, and succeeding. We invite students of our public service programs or School of Education, or anyone interested in learning more about the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to visit http://www.gatesfoundation.org. If you have a U.S. 501(c)(3) organization or a tax-exempt organization and would like to see how you can help, you can visit their grant opportunities section or access other grant seeking resources.
