Kaplan University student Brittany Keiter is the 2012 recipient of a $2,000 National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) Chapter Award. The annual award is given to only one student member from each of the 300 registered NSCS chapters.
Recognizing Brittany’s accomplishment, Kaplan University’s NSCS faculty adviser Dr. Ellen Manning said, “With so many outstanding competitors, it is no small feat to win this cash award.”
According to Jonathan Atkins, coordinator of member engagement for NSCS, Kaplan University had 26 applicants for the chapter scholarship, the highest number from any chapter.
Brittany is a first-year transfer student in the Bachelor of Science in the Psychology. Her emphasis area is child development. After completing the program, Brittany plans to become a child psychiatric nurse.
She attributes her commitment and success to “having a love of working with kids, having a mother who is currently a nurse,” and her father’s passing over 8 years ago after he lost his battle with cancer.
During the 2010–2011 year, a total of $6,000 was awarded through scholarships to six Kaplan University student members of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Brittany was the first recipient of an NSCS scholarship at Kaplan University during the 2011–2012 year, but scholarship opportunities still exist. Students involved in the organization are encouraged to explore scholarship opportunities by visiting the national website at http://www.nscs.org/scholarships/.
Kaplan University has been recognized as the largest chapter of NSCS with almost 3,000 active student members to date. It invites first and second-year undergraduates who have earned a 3.4 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or better to join. Kaplan University students were first introduced to NSCS in 2008.
