Kaplan University Student Group Receives Gold Status Award for 2013

    Gold Status Award 2013

Kaplan University’s chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), an honor society for high-achieving college students, was recognized as a gold status chapter at the organization’s 2013 national convention in Houston, Texas.

To receive this honor, an online chapter of NSCS must fulfill criteria such as service projects, leadership training, webinars, and other activities that engage their community. The chapter must also sponsor orientations for potential members and select multiple student leaders to govern the university’s chapter of the honor society.

Among the projects responsible for Kaplan University’s gold status was a letter-writing campaign to service men and women via the United Services Organizations (USO); an online induction ceremony for new members; collaboration with other University student organizations, such as their partnership with Golden Key on hosting guest speaker Erin Gruwell, founder of the Freedom Writers Foundation; and scholarships awarded to chapter members for involvement and academic achievement.

Eleven Kaplan University students attended the convention, including Student President Jessica Anker, who said that she “knew that the chapter was amazing and [the gold status] just proved it.”

Kaplan University Student Life Manager Maurice Brown said the award is a great honor and a testament to how hard the organization has worked to engage their community after just one year ago being awarded the silver status for their efforts.

“Our chapter of NSCS is always looking for the next best thing to enrich the experience of their members and support community building efforts, so it’s no surprise that their hard work is being recognized on a national level.”

Kaplan University instructors Dr. Ellen Manning and Dr. Russell Fail serve as organization advisors for the chapter.

Dr. Manning observed, “What a great accomplishment for our chapter. It shows what hard work and dedication can do. Despite all our challenges this last year, overall the chapter has risen to the occasion and performed in a highly professional manner. We are very proud of them.”

NSCS is open to first and second year college students who hold a 3.4 cumulative grade point average or better.
