Receives Recognition From the Children’s Home Society
In 2011, Kaplan University was named Child Advocate of the Year by the Children’s Home Society of Broward County, Florida, for its commitment to supporting at-risk children and families. This is one of the most prestigious community service honors in South Florida.
In 2005, Kaplan University held a mentoring fair and asked employees to nominate nonprofit organizations the company should work with in South Florida. Employees selected the Children’s Home Society as one of its three community partners. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Sherry Thompson, Kaplan University director of events and outreach, the relationship flourished. Through Kaplan University’s annual charity golf tournament, employees have raised tens of thousands of dollars for the organization over the years. Each fall, Kaplan University donates backpacks and supplies to youngsters heading back to school. During the holidays, employees generously provide gifts for hundreds of deserving children in the “Adopt A Family” program.
The Child Advocate Award was established in 1982 by the late Dave Thomas, founder of fast food giant Wendy’s, to recognize those dedicated to improving opportunities for children and families in Florida. The Children’s Home Society provides foster care, adoptive services, and family support programs to those in need. The Fort Lauderdale division operates a residential group home for abused and neglected children.
“We couldn’t be more proud of being recognized for supporting the important work the Children’s Home Society does for South Florida children,” noted Lisa Gefen Sicilian, Kaplan University chief administrative officer, who accepted the award on behalf of Kaplan University and its employees. “Their work builds better futures for 100,000 Florida children and their family members each year. And at Kaplan University, that’s something we strongly believe in.”
