More than 300 Cedar Falls residents turned out on July 13, 2013, for the “Cedar Valley Community Safety Day,” an event sponsored by the Kaplan University, Cedar Falls campus that featured free car seat checks, digital fingerprinting for children, self-defense demonstrations, motorcycle awareness classes and more.

Zach Danielsen, Career Services Advisor, organized the safety day, which was held on the Cedar Falls campus.

“It was a huge success and a wonderful way to demonstrate the commitment we have to the community, their children, and our former, current, and prospective students,” said Gwen Bramlet-Hecker, Cedar Falls campus President.

Some 30 youngsters were the beneficiaries of free digital fingerprinting and a number of parents received free car seats for their children. The safety day had broad community support. More than a dozen agencies and organizations, including the Cedar Falls Police and Fire Departments, the National Guard, the Red Cross, and the Cedar Bend Humane Society, participated.

Shawn Koenen, a Cedar Falls firefighter and emergency medical technician, said members of the fire department welcomed the opportunity to participate.

"We love doing public events like Kaplan University's Safety Day," he said. "It's a chance to get up close with the people and talk about what all we do in our jobs. We are not just firefighters, we're also teachers. We take every chance we can to teach the public, especially young kids, fire safety, and the event was perfect for this.

"It's also nice to show the public that we do so much more than fight fires. We are EMTs, we do rope, water, and ice rescues, and commercial building inspections. These events are fun to represent the city and the profession while passing on a great message."

Squad cars, ambulances, fire trucks and other emergency vehicles were on display and a local radio station broadcast live from the Kaplan University campus.
