World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD)

It is estimated that 2.1 million Americans are victims of elder abuse. For each case that is reported there may be five that are not.* On June 15, 2013, people around the world will bring attention to elder abuse through World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).

WEAAD was launched on June 15, 2006, by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the United Nations World Health Organization. The goal of WEAAD is to raise awareness around the world about elder abuse and to encourage everyone to take a stand against those who disrespect and abuse elderly people.

When individuals reach a certain age they can become vulnerable to abuse by those around them or individuals looking to take advantage of them. Elder abuse includes not only physical abuse but also financial exploitation, neglect, or emotional abuse.

Several government, nonprofit ,and international organizations take part in helping to raise awareness about elder abuse.  Whether you are involved in or preparing to enter the human services field, you can explore several organizations that participate in World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
