Learning Center Experience
November 12 through November 16, 2012, is International Education Week. The U.S. Department of Education and Department of State will come together to promote the benefits of international education and exchange during this worldwide observation.
In today’s global arena it is important to recognize and learn about other cultures. International education strives to increase understanding of world cultures and language. The goal of International Education Week’s program is to help stimulate enduring friendships and partnerships through international education and exchange which can lead for a better future for all countries involved.
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan spoke about the importance of International Education week, saying “It is imperative to nurture our children so they grow into intellectually and physically healthy global citizens who are able to pursue their dreams at home and abroad.”
Created in 2000, the week is observed across the United States and in more than 100 countries. With more than 700,000 international students studying in the United States and over 40,000 U.S. students abroad, the program asks educational institutions, nonprofits, businesses, foreign embassies, and other education centers worldwide to take part in various International Education Week events.
The U.S. Department of Education and Department of State suggest some activities for those educators interested in being involved with International Education Week. Suggested activities range from incorporating a country or culture into lesson plans, to arranging visits by international guests, to having students from other countries share their culture and educate fellow classmates.

In recognition of International Education Week our College of Public Service has listed links to International Education Week’s Events page in our Center News and Events section.
