Learning Center Experience
Professor Nabilah Pape is a leader in cutting-edge digital technology education and an instructor at Kaplan University’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. “To me, digital education means helping people learn and absorb information in new and different ways, ways that are more effective than before,” she says.
She currently teaches two classes in the Communications Department: Tools for the Digital Age and Communications Program and Profession. She also works full time as a training coordinator for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where she is responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting digital training programs. In this position, she also produces videos and trains staff while overseeing captioning and making videos 508 compliant (for people with disabilities).Professor Pape has nearly 15 years of vast and impressive experience in animation, game design, video, general design, and digital theory. She is passionate about technology and digital education, and it is infectious in her unique and interesting teaching style.“I view myself as more of a facilitator who tries to bring out the best of each of my students,” Professor Pape says. “I really try to get to know everyone, and I strongly encourage collaboration so we all can learn from one other. That is what makes our students at Kaplan University so special!”“I especially love inspiring and challenging my students to do things differently, to try and flip things around and see them in a unique way,” she said. “You have to be open-minded and willing to adapt if you want to be successful developing digital educational materials. Technology is always growing and changing. Each user has different skill set and requirement. You have to be willing to close your computer, get out of your office, and interact with people to ensure your applications are user friendly—and meet your business goals!”Professor Pape earned her Master of Arts in Publication Design and Media and her undergraduate degrees in television production and corporate communications. She has taught for 15 years, and has been a professor at Kaplan University for 5 years.“I have always had a passion for technology and the changing digital world,” Professor Pape said. “I feel so fortunate to be able to teach my students about the fun and interesting work I do. I want my students to feel adventurous, not to be afraid of making mistakes—and to be willing and open to paving a path for themselves in new and unchartered territory. That is how you become a leader and a visionary in this field.”Does Professor Pape have any advice for students interested in getting into the field of digital education or who are enrolled in our Master of Science in Education in Instructional Technology? “My advice to students is that they need to be tech-savvy or to take classes to get the necessary training and expertise that is required. Importantly, find internships and gain as much experience as you can while you are getting your degree. Work harder than the person next to you, stay later than your boss, and don’t be afraid to try something new!”
