    Professionals working in both public- and civil-service positions share the great responsibility of building and sustaining our communities and supporting the people who live there. In recognition of the growing importance of these fields and careers, Kaplan University has established the College of Public Service—an innovative alliance of three academic schools designed to help us better serve those individuals who build and sustain our communities.

    The College of Public Service includes three academic schools with programs that focus on preparing you to pursue careers and leadership positions in government and civil service. 

    When you graduate from the College of Public Service, you’ll be prepared to pursue careers that help, educate, protect, and improve people’s lives and communities. Given that environmental and personal factors play a role in employability, we cannot guarantee employment or career advancement. However, we can help you gain the right skills and experience to grow or advance in the public service sector. 

    Our Career Services team also offers guidance and information to help you succeed in your chosen career.

    Programs that focus on building professional relevance, and preparing and inspiring students to become productive and successful professionals

    • Providing a deep understanding of the knowledge, skills, and capabilities needed to address both challenges and opportunities within your chosen profession
    • Immersing you in the latest industry trends and topics at our Center for Public Service 
    • Sharing the expertise of our faculty who actively participate in their fields, from publishing white papers to granting media interviews and answering inquiries
    • Connecting with organizations and affiliates in the public service sector to link our students, faculty, and alumni with relevant initiatives and groups

    Maintaining an environment that, through interaction with leaders in the industry, expands the network of our students and faculty

    • Enabling and encouraging relevant dialogue through webinars, career fairs, and other College events
    • Offering several platforms to build connections and provide an opportunity for students, faculty, and leaders to voice their perspectives and collaborate
    • Encouraging individuals to actively participate and become agents of change in government and nonprofit organizations, through curriculum and resources at the Center for Public Service 
    • Fostering an open environment where students and faculty can exchange professional and academic opinions and perspectives through discussion forums, social media, and other activities

    A celebration of and support for public service professionals

    • Driving philanthropy by facilitating and promoting community service events 
    • Offering professionals who currently work in public service several opportunities to save time and money through scholarships* and potential credit for prior coursework. If you enroll in an undergraduate program, you may also receive credit for eligible career or life experience. While no university can guarantee the transferability of credit from any of these sources, we encourage students who possess prior learning to apply for a credit evaluation.

    Public Service and the Coming Baby Boomer Retirement

    One look at the news and you’ll understand the reasons why public service is becoming such an important career direction.

    Case in point—the federal government will soon provide services for the millions of baby boomers who are reaching retirement age. Such a huge demographic shift will force communities to utilize resources more wisely—learning to accomplish more while using less. 

    The College of Public Service at Kaplan University offers graduate and undergraduate degree programs designed to prepare you for the professions central to addressing this rapidly changing paradigm.

    The growing focus on the sustainability of communities and services aimed at need-based populations has increased the call for professionals to serve in these areas. To answer this call, the school offers master’s degrees in psychology and public administration; bachelor’s degrees in communication, early childhood development, human services, and psychology; associate’s degrees in early childhood development, and human services, and certificates in psychology.

    At Kaplan University, you can pursue a degree or a certificate that acknowledges your professional commitment to public safety while helping to further your career opportunities. You can choose from master’s degrees in criminal justice, or homeland security and emergency management; bachelor’s degrees in criminal justice, fire science, or emergency management; or you can also choose to pursue an associate’s degree in criminal justice or fire science.
