Learning Center Experience
Dr. Cynthia M. Turner joined Kaplan University as a faculty member in the School of Nursing in 2010. Her responsibilities include serving as course lead in the family nurse practitioner program, former chair, and current member of the Academic Policies Committee. Dr. Turner obtained a Master of Science in Nursing with a focus area of family nurse practitioner from Old Dominion University in 2005.
She is nationally certified as a family nurse practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Dr. Turner holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in family practice from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr. Turner has 29 years of nursing experience, including 11 years of nurse practitioner experience. Dr. Turner has taught in online and traditional nursing programs for 10 years in the areas of pediatrics, maternal-child, adult health, community health, geriatrics, family practice, advanced health assessment, pathophysiology, and nurse practitioner clinical courses. She has over 6 years of experience in curriculum design, test item development and reviewer for undergraduate and graduate courses of nursing. Dr. Turner is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), North Alabama Nurse Practitioner Association (NANPA), and Sigma Theta Tau (UAB).
Dr. Turner’s research and practice efforts focuses on diabetic foot care among African Americans with Type II diabetes. In April of 2009 she participated in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) DNP intensive and the UAB health disparities research symposium where she presented her project. Her first publication was a literature review on supporting early postpartum at Virginia Commonwealth University. She is currently working on a research project with the UAB and National USA Foundation Incorporated (NUFI) that addresses Understanding Hypertension Among Black Men in the Faith Based Setting.
Dr. Turner is very passionate about providing medical care to the underserved and underinsured population. She currently practices part time at a Rural health clinic in Huntsville, Alabama. She faithfully attends and volunteers within her church and community. She has been a volunteer within the public school system as a school nurse, the take home reader program, and destination imagination. She plants vegetables for Care Assurance System for the Aging (CASA) to distribute to the elderly, builds homes for the Habitat for Humanity, and has participated since 2010 for the Alabama American Heart Association Heart Walk.
