Donota Harmon, Kaplan University Education Advisor, Advising Students Since 2005

As an Education Advisor at Kaplan University's School of Nursing, I’m responsible for supporting and guiding both undergraduate and graduate students through their educational journeys. I was the first advisor in Chicago when I started back in 2005. Since then, I have seen many changes in the field of nursing, and I’ve seen Kaplan University grow leaps and bounds. In the School’s 10-year history, we launched the associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degree programs, and most recently, we added our Doctor of Nursing Practice program. This program enables registered nurses (RNs) to earn a professional doctorate in nursing, which is becoming more of the industry standard for nurses who want to practice at the highest levels of the profession.

Today we have 9 Education Advisors in Chicago alone. We all work in the best interest of our students by helping them choose the right courses so they can be as productive as possible. I think the support our students receive from our advising staff goes a long way for anyone who might feel anxious about going back to school. We are frequently in contact with our students from beginning to end, making sure they don’t feel overloaded, and we reach out to them during difficult times.

When it comes to the learning environment, our instructors are very well versed in their material and bring so much real-world experience to the table. I have many students tell me what a great experience they had with Kaplan University. And they’re using their knowledge to get ahead in the workplace. For example, we recently had a student during her practicum experience get offered a job because the facility was so impressed with her skillset and proposal. That particular student went back to thank her Kaplan University instructors after getting hired.*

As far as working at Kaplan University, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a career in education. Our schedules are flexible and it’s such a rewarding experience to see your students succeed. To be able to say that you helped that person get where they are today means a lot. With our support team and innovative academics, I think the Kaplan University School of Nursing will continue to grow even more over the next 10 years, and beyond.
