Two faculty researchers from Kaplan University-Maine, have recently returned from Freiburg, Germany having presented their preliminary findings of their year-long study titled “Economic Impact and Desirability Study of the Maine Motorcoach Industry”. Mimi Gough, Department Chair of Travel and Hospitality and Dr. Deb Wyman, Department Chair of Business Administration were invited to present initial findings from their study at the International Society of Travel and Tourism Educators, Annual Meeting (ISTTE) held this year in Germany.
Gough and Wyman have been collaborating on this project since October 2011, which focuses on the economic impact of the motorcoach industry on the State of Maine and the desirability of each of Maine’s eight tourist regions to tour operators and their customers. They have been meeting with The Maine Motorcoach Network (MMN) and the State of Maine Office of Tourism (MOT) since January 2012 and have made them fully aware of this research project, which was funded solely by Kaplan University-Maine. The researchers also presented their preliminary findings during the October 2012 meeting of MMN and MOT.
Additional research is pending as the team will be surveying tour escorts, tour takers and potential tour takers to Maine. This benchmark study is the first of its kind in recent years, as the last one was completed in 1989. Data analysis and results from each survey will be shared with MMN and MOT, as well as tour operators interested in the final outcomes. The researchers expect this study to be completed by December 31, 2012.
