For the third consecutive year, Kaplan University’s campuses in Maine have been a contributor and major sponsor of Volunteer of America’s Camp POSTCARD in Poland, Maine.
For the past 8 years, actor Patrick Dempsey has hosted the annual 5K/10K trek and cycling event called the Dempsey Challenge, which was created to support the Dempsey Center, which offers cancer support services absolutely free. While Kaplan University supports many community events, this one is particularly special because of the University's ties to the Lewiston/Auburn area. This year it was more important than ever for the Maine campuses to be involved, having lost two colleagues to cancer.

In collaboration with students from Kaplan University's Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, local police and fire departments participated in a mock mass casualty training exercise late summer on the University’s Augusta campus.
The day-long event provided an opportunity for emergency personnel to evaluate response time and effectiveness when dealing with similar situations and allowed them to identify areas for improvement in their approach.
In early September, Kaplan University’s Maine campuses served as the premier sponsor of the Bangor Region’s Chamber of Commerce annual golf tournament. A few hundred business leaders and community members took to the 27-hole golf course as part of a fundraiser intended to help the Chamber carry out its mission. Kaplan University leaders were introduced by Chamber President and CEO, Deb Neumann, prior to delivering a few words about the University’s dedication to meeting the training needs of Maine's employers. The event was extremely well attended and allowed for local businesses to network and form new relationships, all while enjoying some sunshine and a few laughs.
On Saturday, August 27, 2016 over 100 Kaplan University Maine alumni, students, staff and family joined together for an afternoon of family fun and fellowship at Maine Wildlife Park. In addition to a barbeque and free entrance to the park, Kaplan University Maine hosted a school supplies drive for the Success Primary and Middle School in Hopewell, Jamaica. The 2016 Summer Commencement for Kaplan University Maine campuses (Augusta, Lewiston, and South Portland) and local online students was held on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at the Merrill Auditorium where 408 celebrated their academic achievements. The graduates earned certificate, associate's, bachelor's, or master's degrees from Kaplan University’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Schools of Business and Information Technology, Education, Health Sciences, and NursingFormer U.S. Representative Dr. Peter Smith, who also served as Vermont Lieutenant Governor and Founding President of three higher education institutions including the Community College of Vermont, California State University and the Open College at Kaplan University (OC@KU), delivered the keynote address.“The promise of opportunity lies at the heart of the American Dream. And education delivers on that promise,” Dr. Smith told the graduates. “With your success today comes the added responsibility of keeping the door to opportunity open for others in the years ahead.”A complete list of graduates is available upon request.

Two faculty researchers from Kaplan University-Maine, have recently returned from Freiburg, Germany having presented their preliminary findings of their year-long study titled “Economic Impact and Desirability Study of the Maine Motorcoach Industry”. Mimi Gough, Department Chair of Travel and Hospitality and Dr. Deb Wyman, Department Chair of Business Administration were invited to present initial findings from their study at the International Society of Travel and Tourism Educators, Annual Meeting (ISTTE) held this year in Germany.
Based from Kaplan University's new 19,500 square foot campus in Augusta, which had its official grand opening this past October, and featuring a state-of-the-art nursing simulation laboratory, the new program is designed to equip students with the education and training needed to offset a decline in the number of qualified nurses as well as other trends.

With three years behind them as the official sponsor of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association’s annual conference, Chiefs are impressed and looking to enroll their officers at Kaplan more than ever. The 2013 conference was bigger and better than it has ever been in the past and proudly Kaplan was front and center for the entire three day event!
KU took to the roads of Maine last week, cycling 180 miles over three-days and raising more than $17,000 for a great cause and organization, the American Lung Association of New England.
