Summer is passing quickly, and before you know it, your kids will be back in school. You may have put your career goals on-hold for a season to care for and enjoy your children, but now you're ready to start thinking about your next career move and the short- and long-term goals you wish to achieve.
For example, if you're looking for ways to advance in the field of nursing, there are several different routes you can take. If you have the time and energy, you could take on a full-time workload to acquire your Associate of Applied Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, or even a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Perhaps you have a full-time job and/or are taking care of your children? Consider online programs that will save you precious time and allow you to work from home on your studies. Even part-time classes in person or online will help you move forward with your goals. If you're already a working nurse, find out what your hospital's policy is on higher education in your field. Many hospitals will help pay for advanced degrees. Remember, your employer wants you to succeed!
Perhaps you work in the field of business and would like to move your career forward. There are countless ways to advance. If you are interested in going back to school, you could obtain anything from an associate's degree to a master's degree in accounting, business administration, finance, or business management. Again, you can tailor your course load to fit your schedule. And if you're not looking to earn a degree, certificate classes can boost your resume and skill set. Many of these certificate classes can be taken online. And don't forget about local seminars and networking opportunities. Check with your employer to find out if they will reimburse seminars that are relevant to your position, and even count them as workdays.
If you're interested in advancing in the field of technology, consider certificate courses. Learn about and become certified in specific programs such as Cisco, Linux, and Microsoft without committing to too heavy of a workload. You can obtain these certifications online, and you also can check your local area to see whether there are any courses offered near you. Workshops promote networking and critical thinking that can be invaluable to your career goals. If you feel it would benefit your career to earn a degree in the IT field, associate's, bachelor's, and master's degrees are available online—so you can work and go to school at the same time.
If you're a teacher, you and your children will all be going back to school at the same time! The beginning of your school year is a great time to set goals. Where do you see your career 5 or 10 years from now? Would your master's degree help you attain your goals? It could increase your salary and increase your value to your school. Perhaps night classes or summer programs would accommodate your schedule well. Maybe you really like your school and see yourself there 20+ years down the road-but with more responsibility. You can step up to show your enthusiasm and commitment-perhaps by coaching a sports team or starting or overseeing an afterschool club.
Come fall, take some time to self-reflect and think about both your career and personal goals as you consider getting back into work after a career break. Invest some time in your future now, and you will reap the rewards for years to come!
