change in your career may not always mean starting from scratch in a new
profession. Once the interest or passion that fueled your career goals dissipates,
it may be time to rethink some things without necessarily changing careers.
Perhaps it’s not the career itself, but the company you work for. Or maybe your
position is starting to feel boring. Instead of changing careers, you could
consider switching to a different area or role within your field.
It can be helpful to become familiar with different specializations
within your field. For example, fields like marketing or nursing offer several areas of opportunity. In marketing, you could work in email
marketing, social media, marketing analytics, product management, or other
areas. In the nursing field, you may find opportunities where you focus on
patient care or work in research for clinical trials.
Exploring the possibilities in your field will be
beneficial, but you should also consider whether you will need to go back to
school to take certain classes or get a certification. Some roles within a
field may require additional training.
When thinking of making a change within your field, get
informed about all the different opportunities. You can visit job boards to see
job descriptions and requirements, or visit professional or industry websites.
If you want firsthand knowledge, try to find someone in your professional
network who already works in the area you would like to enter. Reaching out to someone
and getting his or her opinion can help you decide whether changing roles is
what would best fit you. You can also ask for references or referrals to hiring
managers in your area of interest.
An example of the opportunities available in the nursing field
can be found in one blog post about a woman who
no longer found being a hospital nurse appealing and decided it was time for a
change. She discovered many different opportunities within the nursing field. The
blog post discusses changing jobs within the nursing field and touches on how
some people enter stages in their lives where they want to work in different
environments or functions while remaining in the same field.
