Business Professor Steven Cates Receives Top University Award

Dr. Steven Cates was honored with the Kaplan University Faculty Research Award at the Faculty Town Hall held on January 19.

The distinguished School of Business professor and researcher, who has been a champion for students, is a full-time faculty member who teaches human resources management. He received the award for excellence as both a researcher and a mentor of student researchers.

“I am humbled and honored, ” Dr. Cates said after being notified of the award, which was given for the first time this year. “I was really in a state of shock when I found out.”

Kaplan University President Dr. Betty Vandenbosch announced the award at the January Faculty Town Hall meeting.

Dr. Tom Boyd, dean and vice president of the School of Business and Information Technology, praised Cates’ research activities and his work with students.

"Shortly after coming to Kaplan University, I set a goal for establishing a culture of faculty scholarship that would help us achieve programmatic accreditation and raise our academic stature,” said Boyd.

“Steven Cates' research productivity, collaborative attitude and mentoring of both graduate students and faculty have done more to help achieve that goal than any other person in our school. Further, his service as chair of our Academic Journal Review Committee has established a culture of quality for the research done in the school. Steven has made a huge difference to both the school and the University."

In 2015 alone, Dr. Cates’ publication list included 36 academic articles, submitted either as a single contributor or with co-authors. Among his most recent research was a two-year study of the habits of telecommuters.

School of Business and Information Technology Department Chair, Dr. Susan Pettine, who nominated Cates for the award, called him a “publishing powerhouse,” whose “collaborative publishing spirit continues to represent Kaplan University in the best light.”

Dr. Cates’ research efforts have involved more than ten Kaplan University students and faculty—a number of whom have been first-time publishers. At a recent International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines conference, he presented alongside four students and one other faculty member.

“Dr. Cates’ philosophy is to pay it forward and engage others in the research process,” said Dr. Pam Jones DeLotell, interim associate dean School of Business and Information Technology. “He stresses to both students and faculty that if you have a research plan, follow it, and don't give up; you can achieve.”

Before joining Kaplan University in 2005, Cates taught human resources management for a number of other higher education institutions. He has more than 30 years of managerial experience at Fortune 500 companies, including Burlington Industries and McDonalds, Inc.

He received his undergraduate degree in business and economics from the University of North Carolina; his Master of Business Administration from Northern Illinois University; and his doctorate in business administration with concentrations in both marketing and human resource management from Nova Southeastern University. In addition, Dr. Cates studied labor law at the University of Michigan and employment law at the University of Wisconsin.
