Learning Center Experience
A Kaplan University graduate has become the first student of an online university to become a member of the All-Illinois Community College Academic Team.
Jennifer Miles, who graduated with honors in February 2016 from Kaplan University’s medical office management program, was named to the team by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the State of Illinois.
She is one of only 94 students from the state to be chosen. She is the first online student and non-community college student chosen in the history of the Illinois Academic Team.
Jennifer was honored in April at a banquet in Springfield, Illinois, which was attended by Student Life employees Maurice Brown and Robert Marshall and Education Advisor Derek Scott.
"It was such an honor to be present at the awards banquet and see a Kaplan University graduate be recognized publicly by the state with so many other accomplished students,” said Maurice. “It shows that we’re definitely doing something right as a university for the students who attend our institution. Also, hearing Jennifer’s story and the passion behind why she chose her degree and what she hopes to accomplish in the future was just another reminder about why I enjoy what I do.”
Phi Theta Kappa, community college presidents, and community college state associations sponsor All-State Community College Academic Team ceremonies in 38 participating states. Ranking on the All-State Community College Academic Teams is generally determined by the student's score in a national competition, which begins with a letter of recommendation sent on the student’s behalf to the committee who selects the academic team. The team then confirms the student’s credentials.
All-State Community College Academic Team recognition ceremonies vary by state, but are most often held in the state capital with legislators, education leaders, and corporate leaders attending.
