Learning Center Experience
In what seemed to be in a blink of an eye, Angela Azcona’s
life was turned upside down. Around the same time Angela separated from her husband,
he had a stroke. The combination of the recent separation and stroke caused
Angela to go from homemaker to full-time worker. Now, Angela was fully
responsible for not only providing for herself, but her children as well. Her
first job was at a car wash that required 80 hours per week. The demanding
hours lead Angela to find work as a cashier. This career gave Angela great
hours to spend time with her children, but did not provide her with enough
money to support her family.
At the same time Angela was trying to support her family,
she fell ill. She decided that she needed a job that was part time, but that
could still provide for her children. One night she was watching television and
a Kaplan University commercial caught her interest. The next day, she enrolled
in Kaplan University with the intentions of becoming a substitute teacher.
After earning an associate’s degree, her illness gradually got
worse. “I can’t see, I began losing my vision gradually. I’m using audio
technology to help me right now. When there’s a will, there’s a way,” said
Despite her illness, Angela went on to continue her
education at Kaplan University because she wanted to reach her goal. She earned
bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology. Angela was able to exceed her
expectations. She went on to work as a case manager and counselor.
Angela admits, “I went from receiving aid from the
government and food stamps, to working as a substitute teacher, and then
acquiring a position at one of New Jersey’s top mental health institutions as a
case manager and counselor.”
Today, Angela has no problem supporting herself and her
family, working part time as an involuntary outpatient commitment case manager.
Angela accredits her success to the degrees she earned at
Kaplan University. “I used to look for jobs and had to embellish on my resume.
Now, I am receiving calls for positions that people need me. Even with my
disabilities they are willing to hire me. Kaplan [University] armed me with the
knowledge and skills that I needed to make it in a competitive world.”
