Learning Center Experience
Chandice Covington, PhD, RN, C-PNP, FAAN, began her nursing career after graduating from the University of Texas at Houston School of Nursing, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She later obtained a Master of Science in Maternal-Child Nursing from the University of Texas at Galveston and a Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Nursing Research from the University of Michigan. Dr. Covington is also a certified pediatric nurse practitioner.
Prior to becoming the dean of Kaplan University's School of Nursing, Dr. Covington was the chairperson of the Department of Women, Children & Family Nursing at Rush University College of Nursing. She has also held the Florence Thelma Hall Endowed Chair for Nursing Excellence in Women's Health at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in conjunction with the Laura Bush Institute for Women's Health. Dr. Covington has served as dean and professor at the University of North Dakota College of Nursing. Her extensive teaching experience includes positions at University of California at Los Angeles; Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan; the University of Texas at Dallas; University of Michigan at Ann Arbor; and Northwestern State University in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Dr. Covington has authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications based on outcomes of funded grants as principal or co-principal investigator funded by organizations such as National Institutes of Health and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Most recently, she was an investigator on a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation grant to develop a breast shield to deactivate HIV in breast milk. She has a particular research interest in improving the health of women, children, and families globally.
Dr. Covington was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing as a fellow in 2004. In 2007, she was honored at the 35th anniversary celebration of the University Of Texas School Of Nursing at Houston by giving the keynote presentation, as well as receiving the distinguished alumni award. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing Government Affairs Committee presented the Grassroots Star Award to her in 2007 and the University of North Dakota honored her at their 10th Anniversary of the University Faculty Lecture Series in 2008. She has four grown children and enjoys fly-fishing across the world.
